Cobalt’s ‘virtual workforce’ from Landmark (February 2006)

Startup Cobalt International Energy has awarded Halliburton unit Landmark Graphics a three-year contract for the provision of a complete, outsourced hardware and software solution for its ‘virtual workplace’ for geotechnical applications.

Painter

James Painter, VP Exploration, said, ‘As a result of our decision to outsource the support functions considered non-core to our business, we needed a company capable of providing a one-stop shop for all our software, hardware and IT service needs. Within a week of engaging Landmark, our staff was fully functional, interpreting data and finding prospects.’

PetroBank

The solution includes Application and Data Services Provision built on Landmark’s PetroBank technology. The hardware platform is supplied by HP, through a strategic alliance with Landmark.

Halliburton senior VP Peter Bernard added, ‘Cobalt’s decision to outsource its IT infrastructure gave us the opportunity to deploy our virtual technical workplace. This ensures knowledge workers have on-demand access to business critical data and applications. The scalable solution will alleviate the need for Cobalt to manage and maintain a technical infrastructure and enable them to focus on their primary goal: oil and gas exploration.’ Cobalt’s exploration effort was kicked off last December with a $500 million equity injection from Carlyle/Riverstone, Goldman Sachs.�
