Industrial Defender announces host intrusion prevention system (June 2010)
Application whitelisting security system avoids overhead of anti-virus/scanning solutions.Foxborough, MA-based Industrial Defender (ID) has announced a Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS), an application whitelisting-based security solution that prevents malware attacks and non-trusted software modifications on control system servers and end-point devices. ID HIPS avoids the high overhead of software scanning operations common with traditional anti-virus technologies, as well as the administrative overhead of frequent software and anti-virus signature patch updates.
Walt Sikora, ID VP of security said, ‘HIPS embeds patented whitelisting technology from CoreTrace inside our Defense-in-Depth suite. This is supported with our professional services including host scrubbing, product deployment, whitelist initialization, and periodic system audits and refreshes.’
HIPS works by limiting runtime access to a predetermined list of authorized applications to launch on each automation system computer. HIPS automatically blocks all unauthorized applications, including unknown malware and rogue applications installed by users—improving on traditional firewall and password protection.
